Turbine teams up with Xfire

Turbine has teamed up with Xfire to offer players great prizes for playing The Lord of the Rings Online (Full Game or Free Trial) and joining the Official Xfire LOTRO Clan while signed into Xfire from January 28th to February 11th! 30 winners will be chosen.

Do you have to log 50 hours in LOTRO between now and the end of the contest to be eligible for the Grand Prize, or will past hours count?
You need to log the 50 hours between today and the end of the promotion. We contacted Xfire and got the guild problem straightened out. They do cap out at 300, at which time a new one will form. Now that they realize how quick you guys are, they've made some adjustments to handle the rate. So, if you tried to join earlier, please try again now. Even if you weren't able to join earlier, any hours you logged today still count, so no worries.

What is happening is Xfire has a 300 person limit per clan. We filled one clan in a matter of hours. They are blocking out new clans for us as each fills up. So everyone should be able to get in. One note, the Xfire people are only human. Their clan/guild system requires the clan/guild leader to manually approve all applicants. So it can sometimes take a couple of hours to get in. The Xfire staff have assured us that everyone's hours will count for the full term of the promotion as long as you've registered, applied for the official lotro guild, and logged in to Xfire and played LOTRO. Unfortunately your previous hours (before today) don't apply.

30 winners will be chosen to receive great prizes based on the following categories:
Gold Level Prizes (10): More than 50 hours:
6-Month Subscription to The Lord of the Rings Online
Moria T-shirt
In-Game Mount (Bree Horse)
Silver Level Prize (10): 16 to 50 Hours
3-Month Subscription to The Lord of the Rings Online
LOTRO T-shirt
Bronze Prize (10): 1 to 15 Hours
30-Day The Lord of the Rings Online Subscription
Xfire is the ultimate tool for any PC gamer. It combines instant messaging, a server browser, peer-to-peer file downloads, in-game messaging, screenshot and video capture and one of the most active gaming communities in the world into a small, simple package. Best of all, it's free!

New trial has been started

You can get the trial at www.lotro.com/trial.

When you launch the installer it has instructions on setting up an account and key.
As for restrictions a trial player cannot send a tell to anyone who has not added them to their friends list (so be sure to add your friends or they'll feel very lonely). They also cannot use the auction house and a few other restrictions to help prevent gold spammers from abusing the system.
Trial players can be invited to Kinships.

Since the new trial has been started does it include MoM content,  the rune keeper and warden?
Yes the trial includes all MoM content. Trial players will be able to play both the Rune-keeper and Warden classes.

Can lapsed account holders use the trial to play for a few days on their existing account?
No. You would have to start a new account with the trial.

Rising Ire Distance Bug

I did some testing on the various situations

Targeting a Monster
- With Target Fowarding turned on the monster's target must be in range of the Champion or you'll get an out of range message.
- Without Target Forwarding set the Ire skills will initiate the skill cooldown for no effect.

Using either Ire skill on a character not in your Fellowship will initiate skill cooldown for no effect.

Those last two situations are bugs and will be corrected. The fix for targeting a monster for no effect will be in book 7. Fixing the out of Fellowship issue is going to take some programming changes so I can't give an ETA, though it probably won't be in Book7.

Chat Channels

Each region has a stock set of unique chat channels. These channels are specific to the region and only operate within the bounds of the region.
Those channels are Looking For Fellowship (LFF), Regional, Trade, Advice, Out of Context (OOC) and Role Playing.
As an example, if you are in Breeland, you will have access to the Breeland versions of the above channels and you and anyone in Breeland can converse with them. When you enter another region (Lonelands, for example), you automatically leave your old chat channels and join the new region's set.

Players can also define their own custom global chat channels. Many servers have user-made Looking For Fellowship (GLFF) that you have to manually opt in to. Be sure to check your home server's message boards here to see if they have one running.

The names are self explanatory if you know what they stand for. Many are just for the region you are in. Such as BreeTown has it's own, BreeLand, The Shire, LoneLands. The only weird one is Moria. It seems to be one big region, and not separate channels for each area.

Regional is for regional. This is often used for RP (Role Playing). If you type /say, the text will appear above your character if you have turned the chat bubbles option to "on" in your options/ UI options. If you have not turned the chat bubbles option on, then things said on the "say" channel will only appear in the chat log. In any case, things said in the "say" channel and emotes will only show up in a much smaller, limited area- generally an area that you can see on your screen.
OOC = Out Of Character. This is where you should ask non-game information, and talk about whatever you want.
LFF = Looking For Fellowship. Here is where you look for people to group with. You will see many LF2 which is looking for 2 more or LFG looking for group, usually someone is not in a group but is looking for someone that already started one.
Trade is for trading. If you have something you Want To Buy (WTB) you are asking for something. Usually you will see WTS or Want to Sell.
Advice is a good place to ask questions.

Depending on your server, there are also GLFF - Global LFF, GOOC, GTrade.
